Romance of the Beautiful Rose

Illustrations to go with the lyrics of the song “Romance da Bela Rosa”, composed and performed by SÉS.

María Pita

María Pita was an heroine in the defense of A Coruña against the attack of the British Navy in 1589.

In the first scene, the English troops storm the city wall and kill her husband.

In the second image, full of rage because the English have killed her husband, she snatches a spear and with it kills the ensign who directed the assault, who was the brother of Admiral Francis Drake. This demoralized the English troops and caused their withdrawal.

Myths and legends

First illustration: the myth of Narcissus.

Second illustration: the legend of the Buserana.
Invoked by his beloved, the troubadour Buserán emerges on a gigantic wave from the cave into which he had been thrown, and together they dive into the deep darkness of the cave, called the Buserana ever since, from where their love songs continue to sound.

Maruja Mallo

Galician surrealist painter who lived between 1902 and 1995. These illustrations show the evolution of her artistic career.

Maruja Mallo, Galician surrealist painter, along with Federico García Lorca, Dalí and Margarita Manso, take off their hats at the Puerta del Sol in Madrid in 1920 in a gesture of rebellion that sought to break the rules and free ideas.
